More behind Special Interest Buddy
I’ve learned time and time again with my son that creating a sensory-friendly environment isn’t just a “set it and forget it” sort of thing. To get it right it needs real, ongoing support. One experience that really stuck with me was when I signed my son up for a sport that was advertised as “inclusive.” But when we got there, it was anything but. He was completely overwhelmed, and with everyone staring at him, I can only imagine how embarrassed and out of place he must have felt. If he had a buddy, someone by his side, guiding him through the experience, then it could have made all the difference. Instead of feeling lost and alone, he could have had the support he needed to thrive.
That’s why our program focuses on finding not only event volunteers but also volunteers who aren’t just there for a one-time event allowing them to make a real connection. We call them Special Interest Buddies, and they are so much more than just volunteers. They take the time to truly get to know the individual they’re paired with, spending hours learning about their interests, strengths, and challenges. Over time, they build a real relationship, one built on trust and understanding. This connection is about creating a support system that helps these individuals grow, navigate life’s changes, and find confidence in who they are.
I know that at age 21, many of the support services individuals rely on just disappear. I haven’t gotten to that point yet with my son, but when I do, I want things to be different. I don’t want him to be left without guidance, trying to figure everything out on his own. He will need real, lasting support, not just as a child, but through his entire life. That’s why I hope that Special Interest Buddies can help bridge that gap. These buddies can be a source of stability, someone who truly understands their unique strengths and interests, and maybe even someone who helps them find the right path for employment or independent living when the time comes.
Of course, building this kind of trust and connection takes time, and we take it seriously. All Special Interest Buddies will go through the necessary clearances to ensure safety and accountability. This includes background checks and the required child abuse clearances, because the individuals we support deserve to be surrounded by people who truly have their best interests at heart.
If you or someone you know has the heart and dedication to become a Special Interest Buddy, we would love to have you join us. This isn’t just about volunteering, it’s about making a difference in someone’s life. It’s about being the person who steps in, who cares, and who changes someone’s future for the better. Imagine if this was your loved one—wouldn’t you want them to have that kind of support?
Let’s build a world where inclusion isn’t just a word, but an action.
